Nearly 70 Percent of New 2013 CHM Veterans Return to Marathon

After last year’s Chevron Houston Marathon, 85 runners – the majority of them from the greater Houston area – had finished their 10th Houston Marathon to become an official Houston Marathon Veteran.

And, of course, much to the delight of the organizer, after the runner’s efforts over the years, an overwhelming majority of them will return to the marathon distance for this year’s race.

Just twenty percent – 15 runners – decided not to participate in any Chevron Houston Marathon event in 2013.

Two deferred their entry to 2014, while one is participating in the ABB 5K on Saturday and ten in the Aramco Half Marathon which leaves 57 – just over 67 percent – to start on their second decade of Chevron Houston Marathon finishes.

Local Elites at 2013 Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Half Marathon

While the Chevron Houston Marathon's Run For A Reason program will raise more than $2 million for approximately 60 partner charities, another of its success programs -- the Local Elite Invited Runner program -- gives some of the greater Houston area's top amateur runners the opportunity to receive many of the same perks and benefits as the world's best based on their performances at local races last fall.

This year, 37 athletes -- 25 in Sunday's Chevron Houston Marathon and 12 in the Aramco Half Marathon -- will toe the start line after being the first runner to meet a specific time standard for their age group at either last year's Chevron Houston Marathon, the USA Space City 10-Miler, the Houston Half Marathon, the HMSA Classical 25K or the Finish Line Sports Sugar Land 30K.

Included are Houston's Jack Lippincott and Katy's Maria Camacho, the athletes who represent their gender with the most career Houston Marathon finishes, as well as the 2003 Houston Marathon overall winner Sean Wade, who is set to run the half marathon in 2013.

The complete list of athletes, their age, city of residence and how they qualified is listed underneath the event they are racing on Sunday:
