Silo District Marathon Observations
Grab a cup of coffee. This could be a long post.
Probably should bring some background information to the table before talking about what transpired today in Waco at the inaugural Silo District Marathon.
If you follow me on Facebook, you know that when the race was announced I seemed pretty critical.
First, the race announced entry fees of $150 for the marathon and $135 for the half marathon. They are the second highest in Texas behind Houston - for a brand-new race. (However, I now have a theory why this is/was.)
That raised my eyebrows a bit.
Yes, I understood/understand what the cause was/is all about.
However, the race made its announcement two days before a marathon in Waco - the seventh oldest in the Lone Star state - put on by a good friend and an incredible contributor to Texas' running and triathlon scene for more than 10 years, without an approved course, was not timely releasing posts on its Facebook event page and hadn't engaged a race production company at that time.
I did an Open Records request with the City of Waco to see what was on the Special Events application permit. There wasn't a lot on it, and it was such that they originally wanted to do the race on Mother's Day Saturday.
Even though they went out and got Logan Burgess to measure and certify their course (one of the best!) and hired Racing Systems out of Dallas as its race production company, I was generally concerned about the number of first-timers at the longer distances who were running or racing with three months of preparation -- for what could be some old-fashioned Texas heat.
So attending the race today has always been on the calendar.
I was already pretty beat from being up early and announcing yesterday's 14th annual Impact A Hero 5K at Constellation Field in Sugar Land and getting a bit of afternoon rest.
After dinner and reading a little, I went to sleep at about 9:30 a.m. with a 1:45 a.m. wake-up call to begin driving to Waco by 2 a.m., which would put feet on the ground by 5 a.m.
After studying the maps, I parked at a place that I could leave whenever I chose to.
I made my way to what turned out to be the 5K start. It was a pretty understated setup.
Since I had never really been to the Silos, I could see them off in the distance with all of the lights.
I saw where the finish line was. They had a similar setup that The Woodlands Marathon uses at its finish on The Woodlands Waterway.
When there, Your Sporting Image's Karen Thibodeaux pulled up. I helped her get one thing out of her mini-SUV and we chatted for about 5-10 minutes as she got situated.
Announcements began at about 6 a.m. I didn't initially recognize the voice as it was a bit of a rough opening - something I experience often (like to get the first one out of the way to get into a rhythm), but soon learned it was Austin's Adam Reiser.
Former Rice Owl, an excellent masters runner (just barely though - 41, I think) and a really good announcer. He does the bulk of the heavy lifting for all of the Run Houston Race Series, Bayou City Half Marathon Series and the Bayou City Tri Series races.
Our styles are different, but definitely respect each other as fellow professionals.
As I saw some of the foreign athletes milling around – and a couple running around scattered trying to get their bib, I also saw former McNeese State athlete Jarrett Le Blanc and his girlfriend.
We had a great conversation and I just kept moving around to get a layout of the start line corral, which was setup in front of the First Baptist Church of Waco.
I had tweeted that the start line setup for both races (marathon/half marathon and the 5K) were pretty minimalist. However, later thinking about writing this, it made perfect sense because the fencing could be taken down quickly after the half marathoners started to re-open the street so First Baptist could start their church services on time this morning.
I visited with Adam a little bit. I shared with him who I knew was running and that I had just kept pinging the confirmation question on the getmeregistered.com site to see if I could figure out who was running.
In Sunday morning’s article in the Waco Tribune Herald written by John Werner (and which appeared online early Saturday evening), the Magnolia spokeperson said that he couldn’t speak to individual races.
I call “baloney” on that. At that point in time, if you’ve shut down registration and you’re not giving any comps (as I was told by a couple of guys who paid the $150 entry fee), then you pretty well know who’s in the field – unless you’re squeezing in a foreign runner at the last minute.
I saw Steve Maliszewski and Tim and Vicki Nolan. Tim and Vicki were pacing the 3:40 marathon group for Beast Pacing. Steve? Just out for another hot race – to counterbalance Boston, of course.
He’s a two-time Badwater 135 finisher.
I snapped a picture of the two and shortly thereafter, Chip Gaines made his appearance. This was at about 6:40 – 20 minutes before the start of the race.
Again, I’m aware of how everybody is a big fan of the couple, their location, their show and now their restaurant. So I was interested to hear him speak to everybody before the race.
I was impressed. He handled it all very, very well. And you have to know that anybody that’s in front of the camera is generally going to be pretty comfortable speaking easily in public.
I snapped a picture or two and I turned around and there had to have been at least 200-300 people with their phones out hanging on every word he said.
After he got done – and with an inadvertent mic drop, Adam announced that the marathon would start at 7:10 a.m. I learned shortly thereafter that the reason was because not all of the roads had been barricaded off, according to some individuals who were out riding the course.
So once the gun went off, and the 12-15 elites came running down the street before the rest of the marathoners and then Chip with a TV crew in a cart in front of him.
So my plan was to run to Herring and MLK, which was about two and a half miles away, and tweet some updates from just before mile seven.
I figured I would take about 25 minutes or so and the elite athletes would get there shortly thereafter. They did, at 35:04.
There was a pack of five African athletes, followed by Jarrett Le Blanc and Ryan Miller, who both spent time in our The Woodlands running community.
The women’s leader came through about four minutes later.
I also stayed at that location until Dallas Baptist University assistant cross country coach Kelsey Bruce came through. I was tweeting back and forth were her former coach and now employer Jacob Phillips.
I had volunteered to Kelsey that she was running fourth and how far back she was of the leader.
I then ran back across the bridge over the Brazos River and down to street level to see the half marathon leaders pass the mile nine split mat.
Again, passed along the same information, but in that short period of time, the gap between third place – which was taken by the young lady from Austin who won the Cap 10K last month – and Kelsey grew.
I cheered her on, then went back up the hill and started running west on Herring and then south on 18th Street to put myself in the vicinity of mile 20.
The police officer at that intersection said that there was law enforcement there today from a lot of central Texas towns, which showed the breadth of the setup for the race.
I saw the men’s leaders come through, but most importantly Jarrett LeBlanc was seventh at that point and looking pretty solid.
I didn’t end up seeing Ryan Miller and I would learn later on that he has dropped at mile 18.
LeBlanc ended up finishing fourth in 2:22:12 in his first marathon since the United State Olympic Marathon Trials in Los Angeles in February 2016. That marathon was his first.
The first female marathoner passed just before mile 20 in 2:10 and change – and there was just three seconds that passed between the two of them.
In third two minutes down was former All-American runner at Minnesota, Ladia Albertson-Junkans.
She has been vacillating between roads and the ultras. (Think Camille Herron.)
At that point, I ran east down 18th Street to Austin where runners were coming from the north to the turnaround on 17th Street.
Afterwards, I ran north on Austin to find my good friend, Nancy Goodnight, and her triathlon group from there in Waco.
Many of them also help Nancy produce her Miracle Match Marathon in late January.
So we stood there for more than two and a half hours cheering both half marathoners and marathoners on waiting for Chip Gaines to come through.
My only criticism is that he had an entourage around him that was completely unheard of.
There were two pairs of motorcycle police officers leading the group and they cleared everybody off the street.
C’mon, nobody is going to jeopardize their well-being to run in to do something to Chip.
He was in genuinely good spirits as he passed us, less than a mile and a half to his goal.
A great job by him – seriously.
To run a marathon, with that tool belt on him and maybe sweatpants of some kind in that heat by that time with cameras in front of him the entire time, he did something that most would not have withstood the pressure of doing.
All in all, a good job was done to produce this race.
I was nowhere near the finish line; therefore, I can’t comment on things in event production that can trip up good race management companies.
I was disappointed that the race didn’t vet its “elite” athletes appropriately and allowed two runners – one male and one female – that had served doping suspensions to run.
The male, Alene Reta, who won the men’s half marathon, was about 16-17 years ago by Ethiopia’s athletic body and the female, Mary Akor, five years ago by the United States Anti-Doping Agency.

My theory on the price, as I mentioned earlier?
Other than the charity aspect and knowing that people would pay to participate in an event WITH Chip Gaines, given he and his wife’s popularity, it was also a price that many close to home may shy away from – and that people would be able to justify finally making a trip to visit the Silos.
I think it is the same strategy that Houston is using with raising its price even more for 2019, making it the most expensive marathon in Texas.
They seem to be aiming to satisfy real or perceived targets from Houston’s Convention & Visitors Bureau for the numbers of heads in beds.
Price out the local folks and make it more of a destination race, like New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles – two of the three who are Marathon Majors.
Do I think there will be a second race? Based on something I was told, yes.
When will it be? I wouldn’t be surprised if it moved back to April, but I don’t have any read on that at all.
Only time will tell I suppose.

194 Complete First Two Races of Texas 5K Series
Last year, Running Alliance Sport assumed the operations of the Yuri's Night Fun Run 10K and 5K from Mana Vautier and the St. Thomas Family 5K and 5K-9 from Terri Frank.
In doing so, RAS created the Texas 5K Series for 2018 encouraging runners to run one of its two 5K's at last month's Seabrook Lucky Trail Marathon and then any distance at its remaining four races with a 5K in 2018.
After Saturday's 15th annual Yuri Night's Fun Run, held each year now in Nassau Bay, 194 runners meet the requirements defined on the Texas 5K Series website at Texas 5K Series.org while another 45 completed a longer distance race at Seabrook and either the 5K or 10K on Saturday.
Note: This is an unofficial listing. Any official listing may be found at runningalliancesport.org.

Texas 10K's with 1,000-Plus Finishers - 2017
In 2016, there were 13 ten-kilometer races in Texas that had more than 1,000 finishers.
Last year, that number dwindled to just nine.
And of those nine, only three - the Cap10K, the All-America City 10K and the Houston Half 10K - increased in their number of finishers in 2017.
The complete list of 1,000 or more finishers are here:
17,126 - Austin American Statesman Cap10K, Austin, April 23 (7,841 men and 9,285 women)*
3,433 - ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run 10K, Houston, March 4*

Last year's 7th largest 10K in the state, the Tour Des Fluers 10K in Dallas, changed to a quarter marathon as their number of finishers fell from 1,899 in 2016 to 1,293 last year.
The Katy YMCA Turkey Dash 10K, the Trinity River Levee Run 10K and Green 6.2 were three of the 13 that fell to under 1,000 finishers last year.
Those races with 750-999 finishers are listed here:

Certified Courses: Why They Matter
“I’m a slow runner, but I’m out there doing something – and I’m involved.”
That’s been my motto for a long time now.
I consider myself old school.
For example, I wouldn’t run Boston unless I qualified, but I’m not opposed to those that decide to raise money for a charity and do so. They’re Boston’s rules. So be it.
I like custom bibs. I understand the Road ID bibs and those acquired through running specialty stores help defray some expenses for start-up races, but a basic custom bib with the race’s name on it does it for me.
One more: I like certified courses.
Other than knowing that you’ve run the correct distance – that is, if the race sets the course up properly, there are two major reasons why you certify a course.
For marathons, it is so that people can submit their qualifying time for the Boston Marathon.
Additionally, it is so that a fast time can be ratified – upon the proper paperwork being filled out and turned in – as an American overall or age-group record.
I ran the inaugural Fort Smith Half Marathon and the race producer, right up to the day before the race, was advertising that his courses were USATF certified.
Well, of course, the marathon was. Even though it was pretty tough, you’re lot of faster runners would fall through the floor without it.
But the half wasn’t and once I was on the course, I understood why. A couple of the middle miles ran all over the cart path of a hilly golf course. Nobody was going to set a record at that distance.
Their thinking was likely: Why pay to have that course certified?
I would submit, though, two more.
It shows the racer – regardless of one’s speed – that you’re serious as an event producer for meeting the sport’s best standards.
And, as a result, it shows that you're a professional – or aiming to be.
Granted, a great race can be produced without a certified course and there are some events with certified courses that have event production teams that should do something else.
So where am I going with all of this?
I started running in 2003. The biggest thing that I’ve seen since that time – and especially in the last 9-10 years – is the introduction of hype into our sport.
And one of the tools of hype - sometimes - is “our courses are USATF certified”.
If it is an event producer that I’ve never heard of, I go right to the USATF web site to see if the paperwork has been filed and is online.
And you’re probably asking, “Why do I care if I have no plans to run them?”
It is my journalist nature that asks the question, “Why doesn't this add up (at that moment)?”
We have no real-time news in running – or triathlons, for that matter - in Texas.
Yes, I sometimes write for and submit statistics for Texas Runner and Triathlete magazine, but it is a monthly publication. Mostly everything is looking in the rear-view mirror – from a news perspective.
So I take to this forum – and other social media – to ask the questions, “When will see the courses? Who measured the course? When do we expect to see the paperwork online?”
If somebody can’t answer two out of those three, I know that they either don’t have a clue or are behind. One of the two or both.
And if you're behind, just be honest and say so.
There are a handful of new marathons in 2018.
They include Run The Alamo 26.2 in San Antonio (held earlier this month), the Arlington Marathon (on the first Sunday in April), the Lubbock Mayor’s Marathon (two weeks later) and then, the Silo District Marathon in Waco on the first Sunday in May.
The first and the latter screamed on their web site about certified courses, but no certification numbers were listed on their sites.
I saw that Run The Alamo was adding a marathon.
I reached out to them via Facebook Messenger on February 25 and asked, “What are the USATF course certification numbers? I couldn't find the marathon one on the USATF website. Thanks.”
They responded the next day, “Soon to be posted Jon here and on our race sites.”
I followed up on March 4, the evening of their race, and they responded last Wednesday stating, “Courses were certified Jon with numbers going up shortly from Official Certifier and then onto USATF website. Delay was due to last minute City construction projects that were SUPPOSED to be done AND promised but SHOCKER they were NOT. Appreciate your patience and understanding but we'll get them up just as soon as they come in sir. Saw firsthand just how hard our Certifier worked on the last-minute changes to THE ENTIRE course within a 2-week window. Nothing short of miracle.”
I saw those maps online this evening and saw that the certifier was Scott Wood, the owner of Athlete Guild timing services out of New Braunfels.
Scott and his wife do an incredible job for the running community.
I also reached out to the inaugural Silo District Marathon in Wco, which was putting out an entry fee of $150 for the marathon and $135 for the half marathon.
That made it –immediately – one of the highest-priced marathon events in the state of Texas.
Even though it is for a cancer-related charity, it just sent up red flags.
After doing a little checking round, I posted the following on their Facebook event page on February 9, “Website states "USATF Certified Route Distances". Who's doing your course certification, when will the paperwork be posted on the USATF website (usatf.org) and has the City of Waco approved your courses yet?”
On February 20, the post was released for public viewing with the following comment from Magnolia Market, “Hey, Jon! Yes, the course will be USATF certified and up on their site soon.”
Just this past Saturday, March 10, I made a Facebook post after seeing that they were going to give out $83,000 in prize money, but noted that the course maps were still not online nor on the USATF website.
Logan Burgess, Texas’ USATF Road Course Certifier, said in a comment on that post that “USATF cert is on my desk. Measured last week and just need to finish up documentation.”
Next up is the inaugural Lubbock Mayor’s Marathon, which will run a single loop around Loop 289 in the Hub City.
Yes, literally just like running around Loop 610 in Houston (which, by the way, I believe, is something like 32 miles around).
On March 4, the Lubbock Mayor’s Fitness Council tweeted (@Fitness_LBK) a photograph of the crew that did the course measurement so the marathon can be a Boston Marathon qualifier.
As of Tuesday, March 13, they are not yet on the USATF website, but I’m sure Logan will facilitate there soon.
The other marathon - the Arlington Marathon, to be produced by Demery Cox’s Cox Racing Services and held on Sunday, April 8 – also stated – albeit in a January 17 comment on their Facebook event – that “Yes, this will count as a Boston Qualifier! We hope to see you all in April! :-)”
Like the Mayor’s Marathon, it still doesn’t show on the USATF website either.
My thing is this: I just don’t want to see an event producer overpromise and not deliver.
I saw a longtime Chevron Houston Marathon veteran get taken by an event that was promised a few years ago in Galveston.
Therefore, I don’t want to see it happen to anybody else so that’s why I take the time to ferret things out.
Is you’re a race director, yes, there’s some expense to it, but go the route of certification, if possible.
Also, if I’m comparing two events, as a runner, I’ll go for the ones that are both certified and timed.

Coming This Weekend
The ninth annual Gusher Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K and its two companion events will be on Saturday in Beaumont.
And the seventh annual The Woodlands Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K will also be on Saturday.
And I'll be at neither of them.
For the past seven years, I've been in Beaumont. I ran the half marathon in year two and announced the race the past six.
Last year, both events were on the same day as they are this year.
I was on The Woodlands Marathon race committee for its first four years (2012-2015), but stepped away in 2016 when I didn't know if I would be able to fulfill my duties on race day (as I was working for a hospital that was going to bring live a new EMR on race day weekend).
I ended up jumping in and helping at the last minute when my replacement had some last-minute conflicts -- and assisted the race in handling a crisis involving the SAT being on the same morning with the testing site right along the race route (early in the race).
I was told by Gusher Marathon co-race director Richard James at the conclusion of the 2016 race that they were going to go back to their original date - the first Saturday in March - for 2017.
I informed Richard that I would be there.
Sometime during the summer of 2016, I was asked - via text - if I was interested in announcing The Woodlands Marathon.
My primary reason that I declined is because I gave Richard my word, but my thought was, "Really, you couldn't pick up the phone and ask me?"
I got wind of some other changes that the race was making and I thought that I was being asked because I was cheaper than the two individuals – great announcers – that they were bringing in from Austin.
Cheaper fee, I’m sure, and no hotel costs needed.
Nonetheless, it was hard to be away last year.
My best friend, Bill Dwyer, manages the finish line.
After I had a flat at about mile five on race morning of the 2016 - and after walking my bike back, I just hung out with Bill for the remainder of the morning and early afternoon – encouraging and cheering on runners.
I thought about doing the same, but I've pared my announcing down so that I could go out and race more.
Therefore, even though it isn't a race in a new city or town, I'll be running the FRESH 15K in Tyler on Saturday morning.
It is Brookshire Grocers' fifth straight year to produce the event and each of the last three, their numbers have grown.
They have more than 1,000 finishers in both the 15K and the 5K.
So why not in Beaumont?
I’m not sure that I can answer that well.
Richard kind of gave me an out in November when he asked if I was still coming for their Pleasure Island Bridge Half Marathon.
For that race, I’m a luxury (meaning that it doesn’t need me to run well).
Other than announcing, the thing that I think that I contribute well is that I manage the start line timeline as well as anybody out there.
So I opted out of that and then I struggled for about a month before I told Richard in person that I wasn’t planning on returning for the Gusher.
The biggest thing is that working the Gusher is an almost all-day proposition – two-hour drive over, 30 minutes setup, an hour pre-race work, six hour race time, 30 minutes break down and two-hour drive back.
As I’m getting older, I’m more wiped out the following day.
I can perform and nobody knows any different, but I’ve dropped races because I’m just not having the kind of fun that I’ve had in the past.
Does it mean that I’m afraid of work? Absolutely not. Announcing and the prep to do so very well is work – and some more than people realize.
So we’ll see.
Nonetheless, it is nice when I go places, like Fleet Feet at Hughes Landing on Monday afternoon, and when I walk in and they go, “Are you announcing The Woodlands on Saturday?”
To those reading and running either The Woodlands or Gusher tomorrow, run well and have fun.
I’m going to try and do the same where I will be.
