Spindle Tree parkrun #100 5K and Saturday Ramblings; December 16, 2023

Have a little time here on Saturday afternoon to write:  a favorite opportunity of mine to document life and keep my writing skills sharp.

At times, I tell people that I'm grateful that I don't feel my age, but there are other times where my body reminds me what the number is.

Yesterday to today is one of those times.

I thought about going to Hammond last night to see a game at Southeastern Louisiana University and then - on the way back home - to LSU-Eunice today at noon to check off two more college basketball gyms in Louisiana.

However, I wanted to be "rested" to drive to McKinney this morning to see the NCAA Division II national football championship at McKinney ISD Stadium - which would have been a new one for me - between Harding University and Colorado School of Mines.

And then maybe to AT&T to see the last UIL 11-man game.

I was up at 6 a.m., but today was not that day.

But then, I had another decision to make:  do I go and run parkrun.

I was too slow on the trigger last Saturday before going to Beaumont for Waverly's graduation from Lamar University, and I went to the gym for my normal 33-minute elliptical and back home to row for about 20 minutes.

Showered and out the door by 6:55 a.m., I made it just before 7:25 a.m., but I often forget that the eight that I've been to now at Spindle Tree - few have started right on-time at 7:30 a.m.

And, that's OK.  It is put on by volunteers and it doesn't cost a dime.

Some of it was the perfect 50 degrees temperatures, but the rest of my good race this morning was from my exercise and diet work.  I wouldn't call it "hard work", but hard enough to keep making progress.

30:28.42 was my time.  Three loops of 9:46.96 - 10:01.88 - 10:04.47 and then the last bit at 35.11.

I always wonder if it isn't a tad short, but the thing is is that it is a time trial course - like the old Run The Woodlands 5K - in that it never changes so you have performances to benchmark yourself against.

This event lives and breathes due to volunteers.  I need to get out there to return the favor.  I haven't yet.

I've talked the event up as well as many others - especially as I've always been upset that The Township denied the race going back to The Waterway (yet now a for-profit entity is using it to put on a regular race).

Lots of people that are always good to see included:  Ken Johnson, Vincent Attanucci, Randall Ivins, Alan Hedengren, Kevin Baker, Katerina Savelieva and the Park family, Jerritt, Kristi and Riley.

I was surprised I stayed ahead of Vincent, but he runs every single day - and is coming off of the Dallas Marathon, and I was grateful that Jerritt didn't lap me.

That was a win, even though I know he probably could have if he wanted.

He said it was my Christmas present!  Thanks, Jerritt!

I then moved over to Hughes Landing to hold court will one of my best friends, Bill Dwyer.

He's got a lot of people heading to his group as a result of some turmoil in some parts of the local running community.

Bill is the antithesis to drama in as much as that he's had some in his group over the years that he hadn't taken action on - with two exceptions.  (I always told him that there were a few others that he could have with.)

Bill's like a pastor that doesn't ever want to take anybody off of the church's membership rolls, even though they haven't sat in a pew for five years.

That pastor still believes that they need to be shepherded.

That's not narcissism on the clergy's part, it is just part of their mission to serve others and give the glory to God.

Bill's always available to help, if people desire the assistance and direction in their training.  If not, he'll tell everybody "Good job" - usually something more specific, actually - and to keep at it!

Alright, I went to the gym just a few ago - and am getting ready for a basketball doubleheader.

I will be going to Stafford Municipal School District Gymnasium to see Texas College vs. North American University.  It will be the 91st gymnasium in Texas to see a college basketball game.

Then I'll make my way to Houston Christian University - will always be HBU - at 7 p.m. to see the Huskies host Champion Christian College, out of Hot Springs, Arkansas.  The Huskies are 1-7 while Champion Christian enters tonight's game at 6-6.

Regular Brisk Walk along The Waterway; December 7, 2023

Love to write, but just never seem to have the time as I stay busy in so many different areas.

So over the last six months, I've been working to not only maintain my activity level but count calories.

I think it has paid off, but I still have more that I'd like to accomplish.  Just overall fitness, not necessarily race times.

Just got back from walking right at 4.2 miles along The Woodlands Waterway.

I start down at Barry Blanton's former run aid station for Ironman Texas and go all the way to Northshore Park and come back, staying on the north side of the Waterway.

Clipped it off today in 1:03:32 - right at 15:10 per mile - while listening to a couple of podcasts.

One fun note from today is that I wore this thermal top that I've had for some time.

One of my nine Chevron Houston Marathon finishes I had trained the right way - one of few, for sure - and had done a Yasso 800 session that I was in the 4:30-range.

I wore the same shirt, covered by the New York Marathon race jacket that I had bought a few years before, expecting a cold front to blow threw mid-race.

The thing is:  the front didn't come through (which meant that it stayed humid the entire race) and I wasn't comfortable enough running in just the shirt because it hugged my body in an unforgiving way.

Today?  Fits pretty good and wasn't bothered to wear it only.

So a lot of progress.

I don't know if I'll make it there, but one is to be able to run a race without a shirt one time.

Hope to get in my regular elliptical work at 24-Hour Fitness (33-minute, weight loss routine) and I've recently tried to up my rowing to 20-25 minutes regularly.

Next race?  Depending on the weather, Spindle Tree parkrun 5K on Saturday morning.

4 Miles Running on Spring Creek Greenway Trail - 10/6/23

So my Internet is out this afternoon, what better time then to go for a run, right?

Most afternoons I set my Microsoft Teams status to the fact that I'll be out of the office for about 45 minutes and then I'll head to 24 Hour Fitness in Springwoods Village for a 33-minute elliptical workout.

Today, I headed to Dennis Johnston Park and ran on the Spring Creek Greenway Trail.

I normally walk out here, but the four miles takes me about 23-24 more minutes to walk and besides, I need to run more.  Right, Chuck Engle?

I ran this past Sunday 10:11.7 per mile for a 31:40 5K at Texas 10 Cypress - a season best out of 26 races and the best since a 31:38.47 at the Terry Hershey parkrun 5K on December 11, 2011.

However, running four miles might have been the longest since April of last year, even though I've been close at 5K.  (Even the 6K at Baylor was pretty close.)

For the longest time, I thought there might have been some residual effects of a very mild case of COVID I had in July 2021, but the bottom line was:  it was weight.

Once I started to count calories, and maintain and/or increase some my fitness level, things improved.

I ran from the park towards Interstate 45 and then back.  The miles looked like this:

2:32.62 - 2:41.31 - 2:41.48 - 2:45.82 = 10:41.23
2:43.87 - 2:39.68 - 2:49.40 - 2:39.62 = 10:52.57
2:37.90 - 2:44.47 - 2:45.03 - 2:49.76 = 10:57.16
2:38.64 - 2:48.65 - 2:48.74 - 2:31.67 = 10:47.70

I just need to get out and run more than walk.  Now that I know that I can pretty much without having to stop and walk, which I achieved during Sunday's 5K, my confidence level towards running will continue to improve.

I didn't run the whole way today.  Incredibly, 82 degrees felt more like 92 degrees.

I was pleased.  I'll take it.  Looks like I'm going to run Terry Hershey parkrun 5K in the morning so I can get on down the road to Seguin to see a football game at Texas Lutheran, which will be a new football field for me.

Spindle Tree parkrun / Vintage Park New Year's Day Classic 5K Race Report

Happy New Year!

This is going to be an honest post, but not a negative one.

My weight is up, specifically in my midsection.  It's been up before and I have gotten it down.

I knew it, but David Reynolds' pictures today at the Vintage Park New Year's Day Classic 5K confirmed it.

Cameramen with excellent equipment captures much.

I'm just going to have to work to get it down; however, I need to do more then what I have been.

Back in the day, I used to blame it on how much announcing I was doing, but I can't that excuse anymore.

It is, however, how much time I'm spending in front of a computer working on private and parochial high school athletics stuff.

I had injured my knee in the summer of 2021 while trying to complete the Great Virtual Race Across Tennessee.

From April 25 to June 24, I ran or brisk walked 314.21 miles.

I haven't been over 100 miles in any month since the June 25 - July 24, 2021 time reporting period.

I got close - 94.72 and 92.77 miles, respectively - this last spring and early summer (April 25 - June 24, 2022), but if I split last year (December 25 - December 24) into two halves there was a marked difference.

With just 675.74 miles running and brisk walking, 428.37 of those came in the first six months.

So, time to get busy.

I ran the Spindle Tree parkrun 5K on Saturday morning and the Vintage Park New Year's Day Classic 5K today.

The times weren't what I would have liked for them to be, but they are what they are.

My time in the Spindle Tree parkrun 5K was 35:19.93 with loop times of 11:18.36, 11:37.53, 11:45.80 and 38.24 on the final section.  The loops are just slightly over a mile long.

I ran the race five times this year and this is how they compare:

12/31/22 - Spindle Tree parkrun 5K (Magnolia, TX) - 35:19.93 // 11:18.36 - 11:37.53 - 11:45.80 - 38.24
06/04/22 - Spindle Tree parkrun 5K (Magnolia, TX) - 34:59.49 // 11:00.76 - 11:36.00 - 11:46.35 - 36.38
04/16/22 - Spindle Tree parkrun 5K (Magnolia, TX) - 33:57.07 // 10:35.59 - 11:06.23 - 11:41.37 - 34.68
02/12/22 - Spindle Tree parkrun 5K (Magnolia, TX) - 33:38.35 // 10:35.90 - 11:07.11 - 11:22.68 - 32.66
02/05/22 - Spindle Tree parkrun 5K (Magnolia, TX) - 32:51.71 // 10:22.14 - 10:58.55 - 10:58.75 - 32.27

Again, work to be done.

As I mentioned in my Facebook post, a special thank you to the volunteers, which included run director Catherine Green (coach Juris Green’s wife), Isobelle Hatrick (who spearheaded getting parkrun back going in The Woodlands) and Randall Ivins.

Catherine had told me that Juris was running with one of their daughters at the Texas Marathon's half marathon race.  I would miss seeing them, of course, but I asked for her to wish them well for me.

Great to see, of course, Vincent Attanucci and Alan Hedengren, who both ran.  They have run Spindle Tree 16 and 11 times, respectively.

I've done 19 career parkruns in nine different locations, and hope to, in my travels, run in different parkrun sites again.

People had commented that I should write a book about a lot of my experiences, but I certainly could on some of the drama that has taken place over the years in the running community.

What did I say above?  Positive, not negative, right?

I wasn't able to make Ron Stitt's race a year ago since I had worked the Texas Marathon in Kingwood since 2010 for Steve and Paula Boone.

Once they made a decision not to be lead on the event anymore (as they have transitioned it to the Knights of Columbus), it was an opportunity for me and Waverly to step back from our roles as race announcer and National Anthem singer.  We were recognized at last year's event and appreciated it.

Knowing that another race was started for New Year's Day a number of months ago, I reached out to Ron to see how his numbers were.

We had a good conversation, as always, and as a result, I decided to go out and run today as a show of support to Ron and his team.

I arrived on-site around 7:45 a.m., went inside Fleet Feet Sports to get my packet (but not without seeing Daniel Braden) and Lina Fuentes was working it - from Willie's The Woodlands Marathon team, but Becky Nesbitt was there too.

I got a great first hug of the New Year from her.

Shortly thereafter I saw Bill Dwyer and Ron, Josh Rivas and David Reynolds, the race photographer.  (I offered him money, in jest, not to take pictures of me as I knew they probably wouldn't look great.)

Paolo Biagi and Tammy Grado, from Bill's Volte Endurance Training group got there, and I think Tammy was surprised I was running.  So was I!

I went down and said "Hello!" to Donnie Artley, who was timing the race for Run Houston Timing.

And then prior to the race starting, I saw Nora Wilson, Dee Akers and Steve Sievert and was intentional in going and saying Hi! to each one of them.

The race started and things went OK.  The weight and how it is positioned on my body keeps me from going more than about three quarters of a mile without needing to walk, going 60 steps before running again.  I've accepted that that is the way that it is going to be until I can work it off again.

Becky was manning the intersection directing runners and I engaged with her coming and going.

I also saw Dave Rainey, who's a unknown legend in our running and triathlon communities here in the greater Houston area, as I finished.

My time was 35:42.45 with splits of 10:46.63, 11:28.84, 11:53.07 and 1:33.91.

The last tenth of a mile seemed off.  I asked Tammy and she had 3.15 miles and said that she tried to run every tangent and there weren't many to run.

If you adjust the time for the extra .05 miles, it would make the time 35:13, which would be in line with Saturday's effort.

Waiting for the awards, I saw Dawn English, who competed at Ironman Hawaii this past October.  She was the overall women's winner for the females.  Tammy had won the masters division.

Later in the day, I hung out with Bill at The Woodlands Running Club Sunday Night 5K that he hosts the first Sunday of every month.

Ken Johnson and Curtis Barton were the only two who had come out.

More next month, I suppose.

For me?  I'll try to find something to run next Saturday, depending upon where I'm going to catch some basketball games at.

I already have a race in College Station that's a target for Saturday, January 14.

Appreciate your support, friendship and interest.
